It’s super chilly today so I’ve decided to cook something warm and hearty for dinner.  I only had an hour to cook so I was set on making onion soup and pasta bolognaise.  Both dishes called for onion, and unfortunately I couldn’t find my stupid goggle in the kitchen so I was tearing up big time (cutting onion with a ceramic knife does help a little).  I had to melt the cheese on top of the soup in the oven, and as I removed the tray from the heated oven I realized my HEAT PROOF gloves were useless!  Almost burnt my hands…

Anyway the pasta and soup turned out great and even the toughest critic in the world, M, didn’t complain.

Homemade wonton is the best.  You can make a bunch and keep them frozen for months.

Garzotto Rocco, famous brand known for its delicious Mandorlato also known as Torrone or Nougat.  The candy is made with honey, egg white, sugar and shelled almonds with no added flavours true to its recipe dated back to 160 years ago.

The box is simply beautiful.

Imagine long time ago when traders had to travel months across the silk road for spices.  Spice was as valuable as gold, something only accessible by the lucky few.  I really love the smell of all sorts of spices, with their different but equally exotic aromas.  For mixed spices I like to buy NoMU’s.  It’s easy to use and gives your meat that extra flare.  Today I use their poultry rub on chicken breasts.  Available at CitySuper.

I made French toast for breakfast and it tasted so good. It’s important to buy good quality bread and maple syrup.

Ingredients (for 8 slices):

8 slices French bread about 2cm thick

1.5 cup whole milk

4 large eggs

1 Tbs vanilla extract

1 Tbs Grand Marnier

1/4 cup sugar

1 Tsp orange zest

1/4 Tsp grated nutmeg

1/8 Tsp sea salt

2 Tbs unsalted butter

Icing sugar for dusting

Maple syrup (get the best one you can find)

Mix together milk, eggs, vanilla extract, Grand Marnier, sugar, orange zest, nutmeg and salt. Pour over bread and leave it for one minute. Do the other side. Cover dish with plastic wrap for 10-30 minutes.

In a medium heat frying pan, melt 1 Tbs of butter, add bread and cook for 2-3 minutes. Turn it over for another 2-3 minutes until the bread is golden brown. You can keep it warm in a 95C/200F oven while doing the rest.

Transfer toasts to plate and dust with icing sugar. Serve with maple syrup. Enjoy!

Oyakodon and Clam miso soup for dinner. Very easy to make.

3 key ingredients to make the soup base: Mirin, Japanese dried fish and seaweed.

I love Clam miso soup. ^^

Corn pops tastes way better than corn flakes.

Today I went to Harbor City for some Jean-Paul Hévin chocolates. I am not a chocolate addict but I do appreciate fine dark chocolate. Jean-Paul Hévin is probably my very top favorite so far. Each combination is unique in its own way with interesting flavors. I find their chocolates very robust and complex; you can tell the chocolate maker puts a lot of thought in designing the flavors and combinations.
